During the last 15 years or so I've been involved with designing, implementing, migrating and supporting enterprise-scale relational database systems. This website is my attempt to share my thoughts and experiences of optimising data warehouses, data analysis and data migration on data warehouse appliances.

The site is intended to act as a quick reference for data warehouse designers, implementers, managers and business analysts who are developing, or thinking of developing data warehouses on data warehouse appliances.

In my opinion the following are key points to remember regardless of the database system you may be developing on:

Understand the database architecture in order that you are aware of the implications of using a particular feature.
Do not treat the database as a black box, something you need not understand. The database is the most critical piece of most applications; to try to ignore it could be fatal.
Do not reinvent the wheel; be aware of what the database provides for free.
Solve problems as simply as possible, using as much of the database's built-in functionality as possible.

This site is very much a "work in progress" project and hopefully will continue to develop in the future.
